Green Batteries through Computational Life Cycle Engineering

The transformation of the transportation sector toward electromobility aims at reducing global greenhouse gas emissions and subsequently contributing to the achievement of global climate goals. In order to enable a holistic assessment of this technology change and to avoid problem shifts, further environmental impacts should be evaluated simultaneously. This requires an integrated, computational modeling and balancing of various technical systems along the life cycle of electrified vehicles. Thus, hotspots can be identified and various influencing factors as well as technical, temporal and geographical variability can be quantified.The main focus is on the lithium-ion battery.

The online seminar provides an overview of the state of research regarding the assessment of environmental impacts along the life cycle of traction batteries. The method of computational life cycle engineering will be introduced and discussed.

Basic terms and methods of (social) life cycle assessment and life cycle engineering are introduced and related to specific issues in the field of traction batteries and electromobility. This is followed by an introduction to the method of computational life cycle engineering, as well as the presentation and discussion of an application example.
