Summary:

The pursuit of advanced Li-ion battery chemistries for next generation performance is primarily limited by advancements in anode designs. There are two approaches being pursued in the markets to replace traditional carbon-based anodes
1) Li-metal anode which requires significant effort & components to manage its thermal performance – hence the solid-state electrolytes, and other technologies, and
2) high-capacity silicon anodes. While the markets believe there may be promise in solid state, the technology and manufacturing challenges push this out at least 6-7 years for mass commercialization.
Therefore, at Sionic we’ve found that the major markets EV’s etc., in urgent pursuit of the silicon anode solution to enhance battery performance and reduce overall battery pack cost.
The promise of a silicon anode performance is well documented and like Li-metal anodes (utilized in solid state battery technologies), can dramatically increase the energy density performance of Li-ion batteries. The industry therefore has been in pursuit of next generation Li-ion performance batteries utilizing high-capacity silicon material in the anode for over 10 years, and has yet to see them in mainstream, high volume commercialization markets. The primary impediment to current silicon anode technologies is cost, complex manufacturing, and cycle life
Sionic Energy has developed an advanced Li-ion battery utilizing a high-capacity silicon anode architecture combined with an advanced electrolyte designed specifically for rapid commercialization in high volume markets. Utilizing low-cost manufacturing processes consistent with existing Li-ion battery infrastructure, along with the advanced electrolytes, it has overcome the traditional impediments for enabling high-capacity silicon batteries to enter mainstream markets.
